Establishing Data Governance

The goal of this project was to design and implement processes to ensure quality of business data and efficient implementation of changes of data-intensive systems in a bank. The processes were designed and implemented together with a suitable organization structure.

Our consultants at first analyzed the expectations and constraints, then together with the client elaborated an Enterprise Information Model to build a “sense for orientation” in the organization’s data universe. Then, they approached both business people and “data people”, the candidates for Data Users, Data Owners and Data Stewards to discuss their views on the current situation, problems, risks and challenges. After the workshops there was a shared understanding built that could be formalized into a suitable Data Governance system. Afterwards, appropriate people were appointed to the roles and trained in the corresponding processes (mainly Data Quality Management) and procedures. A pilot in selected domains, enriching the trainings, supported the sustainability.
